What is Homebound and Aid and Attendance?
A veteran or a spouse of a deceased veteran may be eligible for a monthly benefit to supplement income to help pay for care. Veteran’s benefits do not pay for the full cost of nursing home care, but in some cases it can supplement income to cover some costs. What types of benefits are available to veterans?
How do I determine my eligibility for veterans benefits?
This benefit is available to veterans or the widow of a veteran. A divorced spouse is generally not eligible for aid and attendance based on the former spouse’s service.
Some general eligibility requirements are:
1. Income generally must not exceed the cost of the assisted living facility or nursing facility.
2. Assets (not including house and other exempt assets) are limited to $154,140 (2024). VA’s definition of Assets in this case includes annual income.
3. Applicants must be permanently and totally disabled and/or require care or assistance on a regular basis (a doctor’s report may be required).
4. The veteran must have been honorably discharged and served for at least 90 days, one of which was during active military conflict periods.
